Second Workshop on Comics and Politics
Comics, Censorship and Freedom of Expression
The Centre for the Study of European Politics and Society (CSEPS) at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, the Israeli Cartoon Museum in Holon and the Department of Politics and Government at Ben Gurion University of the Negev invite researchers and creators to propose papers for the Second Workshop on Comics and Politics. This year the workshop will address topics on Censorship and Freedom of Expression. The workshop will take place both in Holon and in Beer Sheva on May 17-19 2011.
The comics’ genre has been subjected to many attempts to control its contents and form : the infamous Comic Code in the United States, censorship under non-democratic regimes, or censorship and control of comics’ production under occupation. We propose to discuss and think together about the kind of “threats” represented by comics, the different attempts to censor and control comics and the ways in which writers and artists attempted to cope with the threats to freedom of expression. The workshop will be organized in four panels : (i) Comics under non-democratic regimes and anti-democratic threats, (ii) Comics under occupation, (iii) Queer comics and censorship and self-censorship, (iv) What happened to Israeli radical political comics ?
